Estate Planning and Protection, Make a Will!

Written by Pamela Howe Wednesday, 12 September 2007

I know of a lady in her late 50s who was going into LONG TERM CARE. Her estate was worth £500,000 and house was about to be put up for sale to help pay for this as her husband had died 18 months previously and  her children, were all grown up. She could have been left with just £12,500 to pass on to her son and daughter, and the grandchildren she adored.

When I met with her family and was told this, I immediately mentioned a DEED OF VARIATION which enables experts to re-write a WILL & TESTAMENT within 2 years of death.

What I, Pamela Howe, from Wills in Warwickshire did for that family was save them £80,000 in INHERITANCE TAX, as well as up to £487,500 for  the Social Services bill to pay for Mum’s Long Term Care.

What I also did was protect Mum & Dad’s assets for the educational and medical benefit of their children and their grandchildren. This means no University fees or re-training worries, no fears that a divorce will take that money away from them, means the grandchildren too will get their grandparents’ assets, not some second spouse etc.

Obviously this cost a fair bit more than your average WILL & TESTAMENT, but the relief that it is done, the years of benefit that will accrue, make it so worthwhile. For the price of a family holiday, that family can now rest assured that their ESTATE PLANNING and ESTATE PROTECTION is complete.
